About MOT Checker

Free, instant access to official DVSA and DVLA vehicle data — for every UK driver, every day.

Our Mission

MOT Checker was built to give every UK driver straightforward, free access to the vehicle data the government already holds on their car. There is no reason that information should be difficult to find or hidden behind paywalls — it belongs to you, and you should be able to read it in seconds.

Whether you are checking your own vehicle's MOT status the night before your renewal is due, investigating a used car before a private purchase, or simply curious about your vehicle's test history, MOT Checker gives you a clear, complete picture — directly from the official DVSA and DVLA databases. No guesswork, no outdated caches, no interpretation added on top.

We also believe that raw data is only half the story. A long list of defect codes means little to most drivers. That is why we built tools like the MOT Health Score, the mileage credibility graph, and the defect analysis breakdown — to translate official DVSA records into plain-English insights that actually help you make decisions about your vehicle.

How It Works

Official DVSA data

Every MOT result — pass, fail, mileage, advisories, and failure reasons — is pulled in real time from the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). This is the same data the government publishes. We do not alter or supplement it.

Live DVLA tax status

Road tax and SORN status is fetched directly from the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency). A single check confirms both MOT and tax in one place — the two legal requirements every road-legal vehicle must meet.

Real-time results

We do not cache vehicle results. Every check queries the live API, so what you see reflects the current state of the government's record for that vehicle — not a snapshot from days or weeks ago.

Full history since 2005

The DVSA database holds MOT records going back to 2005. Our checker surfaces every test on record — making it one of the most comprehensive free MOT history tools available to UK drivers.

MOT Health Score

Our in-house scoring algorithm analyses pass rate, defect severity, mileage consistency, and test frequency to produce a single 0–100 score. It is designed to give buyers and owners a fast, meaningful signal about a vehicle's maintenance history.

Always free

MOT Checker has no subscription, no account requirement, and no limit on the number of checks you can run. Every feature — including the full health report and PDF download — is completely free of charge.

Data Sources & Accuracy

All vehicle and MOT data displayed on MOT Checker originates from two official UK government sources:

  • DVSA MOT History API — provides the complete MOT test record for any UK-registered vehicle, including test dates, results, recorded mileage, failure reasons, and advisory notices.
  • DVLA Vehicle Enquiry API — provides current road tax status, SORN status, tax expiry date, and basic vehicle details including make, model, colour, and fuel type.

Data is sourced under the Open Government Licence v3.0 and contains public sector information. Crown copyright applies to all government data displayed on this site.

While we strive to display data accurately, MOT Checker is not an official government service. For the definitive legal record of any vehicle, always cross-reference with GOV.UK MOT history and GOV.UK vehicle tax.
