About this check
ULEZ and Clean Air Zones — what you need to know
Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ) and Clean Air Zones (CAZ) are traffic charge schemes that apply daily fees to vehicles that do not meet minimum emission standards. They exist to reduce air pollution in city centres, and they now affect drivers across a growing number of UK cities.
London's ULEZ is the largest, covering all 33 London boroughs since August 2023. The daily charge is £12.50 for non-compliant cars and applies 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For most petrol cars, compliance requires a Euro 4 standard (typically 2006 onwards). For diesel cars, the standard is higher at Euro 6 (typically 2015 onwards). Electric vehicles are always exempt.
Outside London, cities including Birmingham, Bristol, Bath, Bradford, Portsmouth, and Newcastle operate their own CAZ schemes with varying standards and charges. If you regularly drive into any of these city centres, knowing your vehicle's compliance status could save you significant money.
Our tool shows your vehicle's fuel type, engine size, and registration details from the official DVSA database — the key information you need before using TfL's official ULEZ checker or your local city's CAZ tool for a definitive compliance answer.
