About MOT Testing in the UK
An MOT test is a legal requirement for most vehicles over three years old registered in the UK. Carried out by a DVSA-authorised testing station, it checks that your vehicle meets minimum road safety and environmental standards. A new MOT must be obtained every 12 months. Driving without a valid MOT certificate — other than driving directly to a pre-booked test — is illegal and can result in a fine of up to £1,000.
The maximum fee for a standard car (Class 4) MOT is set by the government at £54.85. Testing stations may charge less but cannot legally charge more. Many garages offer discounted MOTs, free partial retests, and same-day appointments — especially on weekdays. MOTChecker lists over 23,000 DVSA-approved test centres across England, Wales, and Scotland so you can find and compare local options.
