Why checking mileage history protects you when buying used
Mileage clocking is one of the most common forms of car fraud in the UK. An estimated 150,000 clocked vehicles are sold every year, with buyers paying thousands of pounds more than the car is actually worth — and inheriting hidden wear and reliability problems that should have been factored into the price.
The odometer display inside a vehicle can be altered with relatively simple equipment. But the MOT mileage record cannot. Every time a vehicle undergoes an MOT test, the tester records the odometer reading and submits it to the DVSA's central database. These records are permanent and cannot be changed by garages, sellers, or previous owners.
By viewing the mileage recorded at every MOT test, you can build an accurate picture of the vehicle's true usage. If the mileage ever decreases between tests — even by a small amount — that is an unambiguous sign that the odometer has been tampered with. Similarly, implausibly low annual mileage additions for a car claimed to have been in regular use should raise questions.
